How VW has affected my life - A journey with Volkswagen
VW has been a big part of my life...now even more so
My Volkswagen story starts way back when I was a young fella.
My first interaction with the VW brand was probably much the same as many of you, watching the range of HERBIE movies and comics.
Herbie the race Beetle with it's racing stripes and race number 53 was such an inspiration to a young and creative mind. To think that this little Beetle had a mind of it's own, could drive itself and even communicate with other cars, why wasn't I told this earlier?? haha
The second Volkswagen influence that occurred to me was my Fathers mate Benny, he had a 70's style Orange Pop Top Vw Kombi that he travelled everywhere in. He certainly didn't travel very fast in this Kombi but everywhere he went he had a bed and a kitchen too.
I was fascinated by the fact that you could travel in your own holiday home, and have wanted a Kombi style vehicle all my life.
In my early teens my Mum upgraded to a VW Passat during the 80's and this was certainly an upgrade from our previous car.
Then when it was time to start to learn how to drive the first VW Beetle was introduced to the family. This was primarily a car to transport our monstrous Rottweilers', as they weren't allowed in the family car, but it was also the car that I learnt to drive in.
When it was time to buy my first car it was a 1959 Volkswagen Beetle that won my love. Bought from a farmer that used it to cart hay with no bonnet, we stripped it back, re- sprayed in and fit it out with an all new interior.
This was the Ultimate first car for me and I loved it for many years.
