Snowy Mountains Roadtrip in my Subaru BRZ

As the crisp autumn air settles over NSW, there’s no better time for a road trip to the Snowy Mountains. With my Subaru BRZ prepped and ready, I joined a group of ten motorcycles for an epic weekend escape. Our plan: leave Sydney early Friday morning, carve up the coastal and mountain roads, soak in the stunning autumn scenery, and return home on Sunday with memories of golden leaves and winding tarmac.

Day 1: Sydney to Jindabyne via the South Coast

The adventure kicked off at dawn on Friday. With the Subaru’s 2.4L boxer engine humming and the bikes rumbling alongside, we rolled out of Sydney under a pastel-hued sunrise, bound for the open road.

First Stop: Nowra – Breakfast & Coffee
A road trip isn’t complete without a solid breakfast stop, and Nowra was the perfect place to fuel up. A hot coffee and a hearty meal later, we were ready to tackle the scenic coastal roads. The BRZ’s low stance and sharp handling made for an exhilarating drive, keeping up with the pack of motorcycles with ease.

Lunch Stop: Tathra Pub
Continuing south along the Sapphire Coast, we hugged the ocean for most of the morning before arriving at Tathra for lunch. The Tathra Hotel, perched high above the beach, provided stunning ocean views and delicious pub fare. A classic burger and a refreshing drink later, we were back on the road.

Through Bega & Across the Snowy Mountains
Leaving the coastline behind, we headed inland through Bega, then wound our way towards Jindabyne. The ride into the Snowy Mountains was pure driving bliss—sweeping bends, crisp mountain air, and a golden autumn landscape that made every twist and turn feel cinematic. By evening, we rolled into Jindabyne, ready to unwind and prepare for a big day ahead.

Day 2: Exploring the Snowy Mountains in the BRZ

Saturday was all about enjoying the alpine roads and breathtaking scenery. With the motorcycles setting off early to explore their own routes, I took my BRZ on a solo adventure through the Snowy Mountains.

I wound my way up to Thredbo Village, where the cool mountain air and fiery autumn foliage made for an epic backdrop. A drive up Alpine Way delivered more incredible views, and the tight, twisty roads made the BRZ feel right at home. After soaking in the sights and taking plenty of photos, I couldn’t resist a stop at Zack’s Café for their legendary ‘Biggest Cheeseburger in Australia.’ Let’s just say, it lived up to the hype.

The rest of the afternoon was spent exploring scenic spots, including Lake Jindabyne and Dead Horse Gap. The combination of autumn colours, fresh mountain air, and exhilarating roads made this one of the most memorable drives I’ve done in the BRZ.

Day 3: The Journey Home

Sunday morning came too soon, and it was time to head back to Sydney. I opted for a more direct route home, carving through Cooma and Canberra before rejoining the highway. The BRZ was in its element, eating up the long stretches of road while still delivering plenty of fun through the twistier sections.

By late afternoon, I rolled back into Sydney, road-weary but grinning ear to ear. Three days, hundreds of kilometers, and countless unforgettable moments—this road trip was the perfect mix of fast roads, great company, and stunning autumn scenery.

Final Thoughts

Driving the Snowy Mountains in autumn is something every enthusiast should experience. The BRZ handled the adventure flawlessly, proving once again that it’s the perfect companion for winding roads and scenic getaways. Whether you’re on two wheels or four, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of hitting the open road with good mates and epic landscapes ahead.

Until the next adventure, keep the wheels turning and the engine singing!
